The King's Executioner, the guardian of his grave, the Sepulchral Sentinel is a Bordevarian Knightly title clad in death. Well respected and feared, theirs is a dour duty, but one that must be done.

Election

The Sepulchral Sentinel is elected by combat. Only Knights may be nominated for the title, and each knight must be nominated by a character with Divine Lore.

Candidates are paired to fight, with each candidate fighting with whatever weapons they wish, but no armour. The combat is a competitive bout (not a show fight) with live steel (dealing hitpoint damage). All fights are to happen at the same time. Once a bout is over, candidates are immediately assigned to a new opponent without a chance to heal. The last Knight standing becomes the Sepulchral Sentinel.

Term

The Sepulchral Sentinel holds their title until death or:

  • until they relinquish the title
  • until they fail to attend the summit for two summits in a row,
  • until they are removed from the position by a Monarch of Bordevar.
  • until the death of a Monarch of Bordevar.
  • Until they are defeated by a duel as detailed below.

During Realmic elections each Summit, the Sepulchral Sentinel can be challenged by a single candidate, this candidate must be nominated by the Duke of Heartsgrave. They will fight a duel as per the election method of the Sepulchral Sentinel.

Previous Sepulchral Sentinels cannot stand for the title again, unless they are directly requested by the Monarch.

Powers and Responsibilities

Gravekeeper - It is the duty of the Sepulchral Sentinel to ensure that the grave of King Artourious Bordevar is kept in fine condition and is respected. The Sepulchral Sentinel may occasionally have decisions relating to this responsibility. The Sepulchral Sentinel’s correct form of address is always ‘Ser [Name] [Surname] of House [House] (if applicable), the Sentinel’.

Legacykeeper - The Sepulchral Sentinel is the final protector of King Artourious Bordevar and must be relied upon to preserve his legacy. The Sepulchral Sentinel cannot countenance any insult to Artorious Bordevar in their presence and should challenge any who do so to an armed duel, or some other form of satisfaction if they refuse. Allowance to ignore this responsibililty is given if the offending party is intending to bait the Sentinel (for example, by insulting the king and running away, or by insulting the king constantly to stop the Sentinel from going about their business.)

Master of the Mausoleum - The Sepulchral Sentinel spends their seasons standing watch over the King’s Tomb, because of this they may not have an investment. However they receive an income of 10 Crystal Mana and Three Locks each season to maintain their equipment and duty.

King’s Justice - The Sepulchral Sentinel acts as the executioner of the crown. Wherever a Bordevarian character must be executed and it is possible for the Sepulchral Sentinel to perform the task, then they must do so.

History

In times past, King Artourious had three knightly orders dedicated to his protection. The last of these orders to survive was ‘The Hallowed Word’ which departed their post shortly after the founding of The Concord.

Following the reconstruction of The Manor, into the settlement of King’s Vigil by Duke Kore Vespera, finishing in Spring 226AE, the title of the Sepulchral Sentinel was created to protect the King’s gravesite as The Manor began to fill with people, becoming a settlement in its own right.
