To represent the people of the land, and the Oaken Accord that binds them to both it and the Realm, is to be a Sheriff of Bordevar. Standing side by side with the greatest of Nobles on the Ducal Council, ensuring the concerns and trials of the layfolk are known and fighting to have them treated fairly and justly, is to take the title of Sheriff.
Election
Sheriffs are elected at the Spring Summit. Each Sheriff is elected through a vote of commonfolk who reside within the relevant Duchy. Only Bordevarian commonfolk who reside within said Duchy may stand for Sheriff. Commonfolk knights may stand for Sheriff.
Term
1 Year. There is no term limit and individuals may immediately stand for re-election.
Powers and Responsibilities
Membership – Sheriffs are granted a voice and vote on the Ducal Council of their Region.
Place of Work – Each township has a particularly focused place of work for a Sheriff, usually indicative of the very nature of the people within it. This takes the form of an Investment which is offered up to the Sheriffs to occupy during their time in the title. They are not required to adopt the Investment, but if they do their old Investment will be returned to them when their time as the Sheriff is over.
Right of Direction – Sheriff's work particularly closely with the people within their townships, assigning tasks to their place of work as befitting their circumstance. Each Summit, the Sheriff may direct the people within their Township to pursue a particular project of their own definition. Such projects can include but are not limited to minor research into a particular subject within the Duchy, pursuit of criminals, local construction and minor espionage.
Census - To properly perform the duties of a Sheriff is to know of those within their Duchy. As such, the Sheriff is provided with a census of each of the Investments within their particular Duchy as well as the Hero in charge of it. This is to be used and distributed as the Sheriff sees fit, but is intended to assist them in their role on the Ducal Council, and it is expected to be kept close at hand rather than palmed away to others.
History
The Sheriffs of early Bordevar helped to form the Oaken Accord itself, working alongside Warpriestess Jaladene to see the people given a fair lot in life. There were no Sheriffs in the homeland of Drummond, no chance for the people to be heard by the powerful Nobles that worked to keep them under heel. The Kingdom of Bordevar would not see this continued, and would reap the benefits from a mostly harmonious relationship with its internal hierarchies.
While no Sheriffs in known history found themselves as close to King Artourious as the first of the Dukes, their power was not incomparable. The larger the township or city within a Duchy, the larger the influence the Sheriffs of old could utilise. There were times when this too was used for purposes not befitting of the role, and many Ducal Councils were forced to turn a blind eye where suddenly a new Sheriff would replace one oh so corrupt.
As the pages of history turn toward the current, the Wise Council only recently saw fit to bring back the title of Sheriff, alongside the introduction of the Ducal Councils and Duchies in 222AE. Fittingly, this began in Weiland Township within the Duchy of Heartsgrave, though as more Duchies return to the fold so too will the Sheriffs of their greatest towns.
