One of the Iron Valley Archetypes
Overview
A Sagite is one who sees the thread of history and legend that binds the Folk into one people and ensures that thread is preserved and shared. The tales of the Valley must be both recorded and spoken and it is the Sagites who ensure this.
Devoted to their search for new great tales those Sagites who follow Stallia carry journals in which they record the deeds they learn of, taking notes of every detail scrupulously. Similarly, they learn the old tales and search out different versions of the same tales bringing together the common threads to keep the tales true to their origin, naming them Uthaedd; or Histories.
Sagites of Lumos gather new tales as well, listening to the deep emotions that drive the tellers to share their stories and recording the tales as they are heard and felt. They keep the Tomes that record all that can be remembered and gather those bits that were transcribed during the Long Retreat. These they spend hours each day copying into new books and memorising, then long hours speaking the tales from memory, paying great heed to impart a sense of continuity of spirit from the people in the old tales to those who make new tales now. Often carrying important moral messages about how to live a good life the tales Lumos Sagites specialise in are the Lingaedd; Lessons.
Both Lumos and Stallia Sagites recognise and understand the value of the emphasis the other takes, and rarely argue over the differences in the way they speak the same tale. Indeed the feel of the tales is so different that folk of the Valley can almost immediately understand when they are being told a Uthaedd or Lingaedd and know what elements carry the most import in each.
The Sagites are commonly called upon to share their tales at any event they happen to attend, from weddings to feasts, from the opening of a mine to a funeral. Any event is made better, purer, stronger and more Valley when Sagites speak as part of it.
Need:
Divine Lore: Stallia or Lumos
Sagites are first and foremost priests, and cannot operate without this focus.
Reccomended:
Divine Lore 2
Many Sagites devote themselves to the Spheres, and so many have more than one level of Divine lore. Indeed in times past it would have been uncommon for someone to be able to carry a Tome without at least level 2 Divine lore, but the recent turmoil has meant too much is threatened with loss and now anyone with an interest is encouraged as quickly as they can to begin recording tales from memory whose engravings may be lost to the folk forever behind the lines of the Illsivir invaders.
Shouldn't:
Any Other Divine Lore
Any other Divine Lore. The Sagites respect all the Divine Spheres, but to be a Sagite is to be devoted to the specific tenets of Stallia and Lumos that lead to the gathering, recording and sharing of these tales.
Costume Marker:
Sagites Tome
A large tome, often leather bound but sometimes made of wood or stone. This forms the core of the Sagites duty as they keep the tales essential to their people close. Even after being completed a Sagites Tome must remain close by them, and it is not uncommon to see an wizened sagite festooned with tome after tome. Upon their death a Sagites Tomes will be sent to where they can do the most good, such as libraries, schools or temples.
History:
For nearly 1500 years the people of the Valley have recorded their histories in engravings to be found all through the lands they inhabit, now or ever. These histories and tales remind the folk of their ancestors and their deep connection to the lands they call home. The tales of the local area are readily available for any who can read, but many of the Valley travel little, and so relied on travelers to share the stories from other regions. Gradually some travelers became dedicated to the task of seeking out and sharing such stories. Other folk made it their passion to ensure that as engravings faded, or were reworked, that they were recorded and spoken. When the Divine Spheres were revealed these dedicated storytellers and knowledge seekers had already been given the title of Sagite.
Within decades they had all agreed that their passion would guide them to Lumos or to Stallia and refined their purpose further to reflect those spheres. With the recent catastrophes that have beset the Folk and led to the loss of most of their lands a new influx of dedicated Sagites has arisen, desperate to record everything before it is lost, and to recover what is lost, however they can.
Three Things Sagites Are:
Knowledge Seekers
All Sagites seek out new tales and new knowledge to refine old and create new Uthaeed or Lingaedd. The focus of that knowledge being on the facts of what has happened, or the important lessons to be learned and shared from the events, is all that divides them.
Dedicated
The filling and preserving of their Tomes is the primary drive of a Sagite and they follow this drive with determination and passion.
Storytellers
A tale is not alive if it is not shared and the Sagites know their passion for reading is not shared by all. They spend much of their time telling the tales they know to any who will hear. They are devoted to such tales and most in the Valley are eager to hear, often again and again the stories the Sagites tell.
One Thing Sagites Aren't:
Bookish Nerds
The task they have set themselves forces Sagites to engage with others frequently and often. They cannot afford to retreat for long into the Tomes they carry and seek out. While they can be often found reading or writing in them, they are just as likely to be engaged in animated conversations with any and all seeking details for new tales, or memories of old ones.
