Paragons of the Church are individuals who (typically after their death) are recognized as being worth using as exemplars of a life lived in the light of the Spheres, a successful, influential, and enduring example to all about how the Journey can be completed in the grandest sense. The Church can, at any time and for any reason, declare someone to be a Paragon, though typically they look to a list of criteria known as The Aspects of the Paragon; traditionally someone would need to confidently cover at least 5 out of the 7 Aspects to even be considered, though there are cases where individuals with fewer have been raised to the honour of Paragon.

It should be noted that the Artebazzani Church has a great many Paragons that have been raised high over the years. There has yet to be a motion passed acknowledging them as Paragons of the Concordian Church, though the smallfolk still currently treat them as such.

The Aspects of the Paragon

Voyager

The divine nature of the Journey of the human soul toward the Spheres is fundamental to the aspects of a Paragons. The virtuous souls of true paragons are proven to have passed through at least two of the six Spheres. They may have been proven to have done so when they were alive, or the path of their soul can have been proven to have succeeded after they have died. This is the hardest of the Aspects to definitively prove, but once proven it is no longer up for debate, unlike the rest of the Aspects.

Benevolence

Any citizen may be virtuous and live well in the light of the Spheres, but bring no great impact to their people. The deeds of a Paragon, however, must be proven to prosper their whole people in a significant and lasting way - this could be the salvation of a great number of people from immediate and looming harm, the implementation of sweeping or acclaimed reforms that improve the realm, etc.

Inspiration

Paragons are, by definition, inspirational figures that will in later times be held in religious and ideological awe by many an Aspirant. To be a Paragon, this level of inspiration and social impact needs to be proven to have begun while they were still living - this can include people coming to them for advice and guidance (whether or not they are a Priest), the idolatry or acclamation of them by the masses before being formally declared a Paragon, or leaving a lasting order or host behind them with their name and image attached to it.

Miracles

Paragons are blessed with the power and Grace of the Spheres even before they once again pass to the Journey, and as such have great and miraculous deeds attributed to them. These virtues must be done either without Ceremonial or Arcane magic, or must be deeds of such legendary magical ability that they could not hope to be replicated by even the best practitioners. The scope and importance of acts which count as Miracles is one of the most contentious matters for any discussion about someone potentially being named a Paragon.

Pilgrimage

The concept of Pilgrimage has been on the fringes of religious expectations for a very long time within the Church, with many people over the years having argued that it should be something that everyone in the Church should be tasked with doing at least once. It is therefore unsurprising that a genuine, penitent, and faithful Pilgrimage to a distant holy site - done with no other purpose than to visit and receive Divine Guidance from the Priests there - is an Aspect that shows the devout nature of the individual in question.

Salvation

As a figure who will inspire and be used as a teaching tool for the faith, it is important that the acts of the Paragon in life have brought others to faith during their lifetimes. While they need not have specifically taught or ministered themselves, their actions need to have clearly been shown to have brought more people to faith. This can include invading lands controlled by the unfaithful who were then later converted by others, being such an iconic Aspirant for a Sphere that others were inspired to follow in their footsteps, showing heretics or apostates the error of their ways such that they repent, or simply preaching and converting the masses.

Legacy

Perhaps the first of any Aspect to be specifically acclaimed in the wake of a potential Paragon’s death, any potential Paragon must have left behind an enduring physical legacy to be sanctified as one or more relics. This can be a powerful artefact or beautiful piece of artistry that is closely related to their story or legacy, or a building or place that is specifically and exclusively related to the Inspiration that the Paragon is proclaimed for.
