Chains of Fate, Slicked with Blood - Conflux Report

From Esterrapedia

A Summit could not occur without the passing of at least a single soul. No matter the victories. No matter the losses. Death pervades the actions of Concordian Heroes. It is wrought by their hands. In kind, it is unfairly placed upon them. Justice, truth and worth are all useless in the hearts of the grieving, no matter the side they find themselves upon. The Concord survives, Season after Season, built upon the bones of the fallen. The Spring Summit of 225 was no exception.

The results of last Summit’s Confluxes can be found within, roughly summarised.

The First Day;

As the sun began to set, 10 Heroes of various origins and goals would step through the portal. Their goal would be simple, set, and expected - but not united. Some held a deadly desire, others one of a shielding opportunity. On the shores of Lake Ladure, not a single one of these goals would be met, not in full. While suffering no losses themselves, the Heroes would nonetheless feel the sting of failure and the lack of progress. The Lady of the Lake persists, despite the will of another.

Not all war is logistics and decisionmaking, just most of it is.

As true night descended and blanketed the world, 10 Heroes would step through the portal with an invitation held close. Representatives of The Concord, sent to meet with something dead yet cruelly intelligent. A great figure of undeath, politically powerful and with temptations to offer. The details of this agreement would matter not, for the Heroes would make their stance clear. The answer was no. Whether this will be a victory or a loss for The Concord is not yet clear.

Finally, 25 Greenweald souls, armed and armoured against the dark, would step into the portal. Let out into the war-torn countryside beyond the reaches of Eisen, right in the middle of an Onyx Aristocracy supply route, the intent would be simple. Fight off hordes of horrid Risen. Though bloodied by the end, the Heroic Wealders would claim a victory on the field, leaving not a single soul behind yet countless bodies.

The Second Day;

The morning began as it always does. A Strategic Opportunity for half of the Heroic Contingent to apply themselves to. This time, it would be The Iron Valley, The Greenweald and Lerona Mere who would be faced with the difficult tasks of The Warchamber. Fighting against the forces of Danakka Rimortis of The Onyx Aristocracy, this would be an opportunity that tested not just the martial might of fighters, but also the cool-headedness of Apothecaries. Dealing with tainted herbs, the potions they created and the effects such potions have upon the enemy, whilst all the while fighting a constant stream of death. This was the task set upon The Concord, and they would be found strong in the face of difficulty, achieving a full victory. This did not come without a loss of Heroic lives.

Where one is chosen, one is lost. The Warchamber chose not to face other forces of The Onyx on a different field of battle. Favouring the plight of Resinderholz over the complications of the Forts of Weiland, a known Necromechanic has been allowed to move freely. His strange artefacts remain intact, and the boons he could provide to the Empire of Death remain a threat. The consequences of this will show themselves in time.

Despite the rest that often comes after such a Strategic venture, there are some Heroes who almost immediately take advantage of the portal. The Academy, the young Heroes with something to prove, would once again venture out under the guidance of their teachers. This time they would find themselves amongst The Roiling, risking it all amidst beings of flame for the glitter of gold. None could argue that it was not a victory after their return.

An hour and a half past noon, 25 Andashi souls would use the portal to enact protection and revenge in the same stroke. Finding themselves within a forward ruin near the Shrine of Maloza, they would wait for the over-greedy elements of The Warjackal’s forces to appear. These forces, bandits and more hoping for another chance at looting the Shrine, would be slain without mercy by the vengeful Andashi, achieving a victory and keeping Maloza safe.

When the portal next opened, it would open for two groups, going to two separate places.

The first, 20 Bordevarian souls. Their destination, Draemoor. Yet again would the push into Draemoor continue, but this time it would be for the sake of one. A scout of the Barrow Hounds. Not all was as it seemed, as it would turn out to be a trap set by The Aristocracy. Bordevarian steel would care little, and a victory would carry home each soul, in addition to the recovered body of the lost scout.

The other, a mixture of souls numbering 25 in total. To the lands around Gafroza they would find themselves, and more importantly, their target. This was an assassination of a ghoul most foul; The Hangman. No longer would Gafroza suffer under the terror of the dark. The Heroes would slay The Hangman in a furious victory. Payback, for what was lost.

For the second time that day, the portal would open for two at once, barely an hour and a half later.

One set should have consisted of 10 Heroes, but barely half that arrived at The Gravetree. It is unclear whether this set the Heroes at a disadvantage, but regardless they pressed on with what they had to achieve. Discussions with spirits in a place such as The Gravetree is not common, especially when the topics erred towards that of the Divine, and it still remains to be seen whether this encounter was a victory or a failure. The thoughts of each soul in attendance may believe otherwise.

The other 7 souls would find themselves face to face with a Cardinal of Artebazzan, a war criminal, and a Herald. Their discussions and topics varied, political, and of great importance to the future of both people. Whether this importance is one to be seen as good, or instead one to be seen as detrimental, changes depending on who is asked. Victory or failure? A question to be answered in time.

The sun sets, darkness returns, and so does the portal. 25 Valleyfolk souls are taken to the northern reaches of Bolsterlee, and there they must slay the ghouls that scurry in the darkness. It is no easy fight, as the creatures of the dark are fast and difficult to see, but The Valley is no stranger to slaying things that do not belong in their lands. The ghouls are slain, their strange ritual totems destroyed, and a victory is grasped with Iron fists.

Finally, in the depths of the night, the portal opens into The Hunters Woods for 15 Wealdsages. What occurred there should have remained a mystery, but for the mouths of the survivors without an ounce of understanding. Still, whatever it was that occurred the result spoke for itself; the beast that had only briefly terrorised The Gap would be slain by the Sages of Resinderolz. A victory through and through.

The Final Day;

Once more, while one is picked, one is not. This time, The Warchamber determined that the Strategic Opportunity against The Trade Principality would not be favoured. Despite many coincidences, the chance to assassinate Aprivanoan Lieutenants would not be chosen, and the possible damage to morale that this could cause would never occur. The forces of The Warjackal would not be hindered in any way, and would need to be dealt with in more traditional methods of war. Perhaps, for the worst.

Instead, Bordevar and Andash would fight together against the forces of The Drowned along the border of Marepato and La Dove Dormani. A distraction, an information gathering opportunity. This simply explained goal would see Heroes fighting a hard fight against unknown numbers of marching Drowned, and they would learn very quickly exactly what kind of enemy they were facing. The might of Heroes would be the cliff against which the waves of Drowned crashed, and the fighting would be brutal. The cost would be heavy. A full victory was gained at the cost of nearly a dozen Heroic lives. The greatest toll of Heroic blood over the whole Summit.

But the portal would have one final use, before the Summit would end. Up to 15 souls could have passed through, but the final number was less. Conditions were met, or not, and passage granted to the accepted. A room, in a place, in the middle of a truly wild place. In this room, words were said, histories learnt, secrets shared. Knowledge given and knowledge gained. A victory for some perhaps, but a warning of failure for others. Still, an offer for the future remained.

Confluxes are a challenge for all of The Concord, regardless of Realm.
